Cellblock Theatre at The National Art School

Hurray, a new venue to look after! We’re super excited to be working with the events team at The National Art School, looking after AV for the Cellblock Theatre.

The facility has recently undergone a major refurb, and now boasts new trussing on Kinesys motors, some 50 Martin & Clay Paky moving heads, MA3 lighting control, LSC Unitour power & dimming control, L’Acoustics PA and monitor system, Yamaha QL console, a Barco 4K Laser projector and a Q-Sys automation system to tie it all together.

Todd McKenney recording

Todd McKenney’s Melbourne shows were destined for June on the stage of Palms at Crown unfortunately had to be postponed due to a recent spate of COVID-19 cases.

Because the postponed dates fell quite a long way into the future, Todd and the band got together at Brent St studios in Sydney to film some of the songs from the new show. The filming was done especially for Melbourne fans, and will go online soon.

We looked after audio with 6 sends of monitors, full stage mic-up, multi-track recording, mix-down, and we even brought some lights along to add to the ambiance!

Equipment used on the gig:

  • 6x Vue a10
  • 2x Powersoft T604
  • 1x Soundcraft Ui24R
  • 1x NUC PC
  • Shure, Audix, DPA, and Sennheiser mics

ClimbFit chooses EAW

2 years on from the successful deployment of a EAW & Powersoft audio system to their Kirrawee location, ClimbFit has once again turned to techroom for provision of audio at their new location in Macquarie.

For a quick and easy deployment, EAW RS151 speakers were chosen. These will be mounted at height in strategic locations around the gym, and fed balanced audio from a Radial line driver in the office. With plenty of headroom, we don’t expect they’ll need to run the system at much over 10% capacity under normal use!

EAW RS series was a logical choice because it sounds great straight out of the box, the nominal coverage suits the venue, and the value is undeniable.

Robbie Josephson from ClimbFit looks pretty excited to collect his new speakers!

Kate Ceberano at the Archibald

Sydney artist Kathrin Longhurst has won the Archibald Packing Room Prize for her portrait of Australian music legend Kate Ceberano.

Kate performed at a special dinner event at the Art Gallery of NSW, and Jimmy was there to look after sound for her. We even got a photo with her portrait!

Frequency Jamming..

Jimmy’s been enjoying looking after sound for the Frequency Jam crew at Civic Underground recently.

Held every second wednesday, Frequency Jam is a safe space designed to elevate marginalised voides. It’s pretty cool, and it will be running until July (maybe beyond!).

Check it out!

Ooh wow, a gig!

Yes, they’ve been rare if not extinct during COVID-19, but recently Sam McNally called me to look after sound for him, Calvin Welch, Graham Burns and Jo Elms at The Gratitude Concert. I took in some lovely DPA 4060 omni mics for the drum kit, plus a trusty D6 for the bass drum. Radial DI boxes looked after bass and keys, and Jo brought her own vintage Beyer mic and DI box, both of which sounded great.

It was performed at The Brahma Kumaris in Five Dock, with a small audience of socially distanced punters at 1.5 metre intervals.

The show was mixed on the house Qu24, and I took in an iPad and access point to use the A&H MixPad app during setup, which was really handy.

We also streamed it live, so I did a separate mix for that. Good fun, have a listen below!

gear review – Avantis by Allen & Heath

Staying up to date is important, and the good folk at TAG we’re kind enough to put an Allen & Heath Avantis console in my hands. I had a great time exploring the functions and mixing some multitracks.

Wanting to validate my own thoughts, I invited a couple of esteemed audio colleagues over to have a look and a play. Everyone liked it.

Stay tuned to CX Magazine for a full review soonish…

Doing something different

Lachlan McLean from Beer Cartel and Jimmy recently went out on site to record an episode of Beer Cartel’s “The Inside Word” Podcast. The recording was done in the rooftop beer garden at Bitter Phew in Sydney, with founder Aaron Edwards. We used the fantastic Rødecaster Pro with a couple of Audix OM2 handheld mics, and the whole setup including cable fit into a single Pelican case!

New gear friday

Hurray, our favourite kind of Friday!

This week saw the arrival of new, and quite frankly gorgeous cases for our EAW speakers. The cases were fully custom built to be strong, light, and versatile. They’re even stencilled to look the part. Hot!

Sincere thanks must go to Jacob at Audio Visual Events for doing such a fantastic job on the build.

Party like it’s 2019…

<Grossly self-indulgent content warning>

December 2019 saw Jimmy celebrate his <age redacted> birthday in typical style. Past birthdays have been held at the Metro Theatre, Stonewall Hotel, and The Red Rattler theatre.

This year it seemed only logical to do something completely unexpected, so Jimmy hired out The Arena at ARQ Sydney and put a Jazz trio on stage. The wonderful Sam McNally, Brother Calvin Welch and Graeme Burns played a couple of awesome sets then later on DJs Division 4, VUE a8 wedges did monitor duty and a Soundcraft Ui24R was patched into the monstrous in-house system for FOH. Audix and DPA mics, and Radial DI boxes captured the content faithfully and the mix was done on an iPad.

Once the band finished, DJs Division 4, Jimmy Dee and Fabricio San turned things up and got the club pumping.
